There are more brands of pet foods in the market today then there are cereal brands or baby foods. So how do you know what to buy for your pet? Here are three simple rules to help you in your decision process:
1) Read the label, specifically the ingredient listing. The number one ingredient should be a meat based product. You may be surprised to find out that the largest selling brands are "corn" based formulations. Almost all grocery brands and mass merchandiser brands are corn based.
2) Look at what kind of meat protein is on the label. Chicken based products are better that meat-and-bone meal or beef-and-bone meal. Chicken has less "ash" (the part of the meat-meal that cannot be digested by your pet) than other meat-meal protein sources.
3) Look for the dominate vegetable source. Soy is high protein but not easy for some pets to digest. No Soy formulations are best. Rice is a great nutrient provider and easy for both dogs and cats to digest.
